What is a Red Herring ?
A red herring is something that is meant to distract or mislead the audience so that when the truth is finally revealed it surprises the audience. An example of this is in the recent murder mystery Knifes Out where the identity of the killer is hidden and the audience is often misled until it is revealed in a climactic and dramatic way.
A good example of a red herring is in the thriller movie shutter island.
In this scene, it gives off the impression that there are two Marshalls going to investigate this mental hospital. At the end of the movie we find out this is not the case and one of them is a patient at the hospital and his partner is his doctor this shocks the audience as they would not have expected this twist in the movie.
